Message from
The President

Dear Members,

Advances in basic medical sciences and technologies have revolutionised disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Information technology and knowledge dissemination, as well as defining and redefining of diagnostic criteria' by scientific groups, have transformed anatomic diagnosis from the subjective to an objective science ~ as in chronic hepatitis and ulcerative colitis; for diagnosis, treatment monitoring and also analysis of studies.

Molecular markers, IHC, chromosomal analysis and E/M are now routine tools in diagnosis in specialised laboratories. Telemedicine and internet consultations help in accurate diagnosis to reach the all important patient. Laboratory medicine has come out of the confines of yesteryears, to expand into a multispeciality discipline with scientists and technologists joining hands. Such facilities are available in our country in few centres only and financial, as well as, time constraints are major hurdles. Specialised centres should evolve a routine approach process, at affordable rates, and results within a time frame, for the pathologists in distant centres, to utilise their service facilities.

This will provide quality assurance in laboratory service and in particular, anatomic diagnosis. Any thoughts on the problem faced by all pathologists at some time or other? or solutions?

Dr. M. PANCHANADAM

IAP-ID Fourth Annual CME

The 4th Annual CME 2001, of the Indian Division of the International Academy of Pathology will be held on October 1 3th & 1 4th, 2001, at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, on the topic "Predictive Oncology - From Pre Cancer to Metastasis". The Chairperson for the CME is Dr. Roshini Chinoy and Dr. Anita Borges will be the Programme Director.

The role of the pathologist in the management of cancer has traditionally been understood as rendering a morphological diagnosis. However it is becoming abundantly clear that a pathologic diagnosis aione is insufficient information on which to base appropriate treatment or predict behaviour. Pathologists today are expected to provide information on tumor stage, aggressiveness, response to treatment, and prognosis all of which impact significantly on clinical decision making.

The rapid strides being made in genetics and molecular biology have opened the doors to the investigation of cancer risk susceptibility, progression of pre-cancer, prediction of treatment response, the detection and impact of minimal residual disease, and the biological factors that modulate tumour progression and metastasis. Predictive oncology encompasses all of these issues, conventional and modern. It brings a holistic prespective to an old problem i.e. the chance of developing cancer and surviving it.

This symposium will bring together pathologists, scientists, and clinicians as facult,v, to provide an overview of the subject, which special attention to the common cancers of the sub-continent. What is possible and what is practical will be discussed. Although meant primarily for pathologists, clinical oncologists will find the deliberations useful.

The brochure for the IAP-ID 4th Annual CME 2001, would be mailed to all the members of the IAP-ID, by the organisers, Tata Memorial Hospital, at the appropriate time. However, those desirous of more details may contact: Dr. Anita Borges, Department of Pathology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. E. Borges Marg, Parel, Mumbai - 400012.

Secretary and Treasurer's Column

Dr. Francisco Couto

My warmest greeting and good wishes to you all.

The academic activities of the lAPID for this year started on a splendid note with the highly successful Mid Year Teaching Programme held on 2nd and 3rd June at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. The theme for the programme was on "Interpretation of Trephine Biopsy of the Bone Marrow". There was a very large response from the delgates, for this excellently organised workshop. The IAP-ID expresses its gratitude and thanks to Dr. K Gayathri and her team for the highly appreciated Mid Year Teaching Programme.

This has evoked keen interest amoungst the members and I am sure there will be an enthuastic response for the CME.

The Annual Meeting of the IAP-ID will be on 13th December at Mumbai, in conjunction with the IAPM conference. There is a Guest Lecture on "Rhabdomyosarcomas" to be delivered by Dr. Antonio G. Nascimento from Mayo clinic, Rochester, USA. There is also a Slide Seminar on "Mediastinal Lesions" to be moderated by Dr. Kusum Joshi, Chandigarh and a Symposium on "Vtility of Kidney Biopsy in Clinical Practice" moderated by Dr. N. U. Ranadive, Mumbai. I am sure the Annual Meeting will proove to be of immense interest to the participants and I invite you all to attend in large numbers.

Once again I appeal to all the members who have not paid their membership dues for this year, or are in arrears, to kindly pay their dues immediately.
