Mid Year Teaching Programme 2002

Message from
the President

Greetings from Mumbai
One of the more pleasant aspects of being President is to travel to places one may not have had the opportunity to visit before. This year the Mid Year Teaching Programme was held in Patiala, a sporting city legendary for, amongst other things, its larger than life Maharajas and of course, the Pati.ala peg! The combined hard work and organizing skilis of Professor Manjit Singh Bal of the Government Medical College, Patiala, and Professor Kusum Joshi of PGI, Chandigarh were evident in the well attended meeting and hands- on workshop on immunohistochemistry.

Immunohistochemistry has been around for more than two decades now and for over a decade it has become an indispensable part of the diagnostic armamentarium of surgical pathology departments in the more developed countries. Yet, in India, its use is limited to a few large teaching hospitals a,nd laboratory services in the private sector. Cost, the lack of technical expertise and unfamiliarity with interpretation of the results have been responsible for the slow diffusion of this technology through the country. However, it is mv contention that Immunohistochemistry is here to stay, and the more expeditiously that cooperation between patholgists is established, towards making Immunohistochemistry cost effective, the better.

My visit to Patiala was my first to Punjab. The high point was a visit to the unforgettable Golden Temple at Amritsar. I look forward to the next meeting on the IAP-ID agenda in September. The subject is fascinating and very much in keeping with the times. What better setting than Bangalore, the IT capital of India (due apologies to members from Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu), for a symposium on telepathology. I wait with anticipation to hear about the progress that telepathology has made in the areas of diagnostic tissue pathology, training of anatomic pathologists, and external quality assessment.

Before I sign off I want to appeal to pathologists with an interest in anatomic pathology to Join the IAP-ID and to take an active interest in its functioning. This society, in keeping with the traditions of the parent body, has anatomic pathology as its focus. Anatomic pathology more than clinical pathology has always fascinated pathologists in training. In fact, most postgraduate training programs are heavily weighted towards it. Yet, for the majority of qualified pathologists Anatomic Pathology forms a minor component of their routine practice, although it probably accounts for the greatest stress. As president, I would welcome suggestions to make the IAP-ID more relevant to all pathologists. The academy, because of its fairly narrow focus has the potential to become an effective instrument for change in the anatomic pathology scenario of this country. Please do write in to the dynamic secretary Dr. Francisco Couto, to me or to any other council member with suggestions, and news, especially about academic activities, that may be of interest to other members. I look forward to the day when there is active member participation in the affairs of the academy perhaps through the medium of our very own website

Best Wishes
Dr Anita M Borges

Paris, France, and then obtained his PhD in science at the same University of Paris in l975 with Pathology as the specialty. He worked in medical practice for nine years before becoming a full time Pathologist. He worked abroad twice: first in Hotel Dieu de Quebec, Canada' for 12 months as a foreign registrar and later on he spent two months at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Australia, as a locum.

During his career in Pathology he joined the staff of Professor C. He then rejoined the Hopital Necker Enfant Malades in 1990 and is still working there. He published a Handbook of Pathology for students as well as an exercises book and was a contributor to the second edition of the French textbook of Pathology (France and Canada). Dr. Jaubert has contributed substantially to the International Academy of Pathology and helped create the French Division of the IAP along with Professor C. Nezelof. He was the Secretary and Treasurer of the IAP international congress held in Paris in 1980.

A few years later he became President of the French Division of the IAP and invited trainees from eastern europe to a summer workshop held in France in 1991. He was the President of the IAP international congress held in Nice, France, in 1998, and has then served as Vice President for Europe for two years and became President in 2003.

In Pathology, his interest first turned toward Pediatric Pathology, then Thoracic Pathology and then back again to Pediatric Pathology according to his hospital affiliations.
