Dear
members, Three years later these ‘fish in a stream’ are ‘beached ’ on unfamiliar shores. There are no further entrance tests to take, the foreign gateway is getting narrower, and the majority find themselves ill prepared to begin a career for which they spent three years qualifying. The sad fact is that the PG course in Pathology in the majority of Universities emphasises anatomic pathology and hematopathology, while the real world requires a pathologist to be first and foremost a clinical biochemist. Our PG courses are largely out of synch with the needs of the vast number of patholgists who practice outside of the protected and rarefied environments of the teaching institutions. The result is that young pathologists soldier on in the field doing the best (some would say ‘the worst’) they can with clinical pathology, while their skills in the ‘exciting and soul satisfying’ disciplines (as one of my students put it) of histopathology and cytopathology slowly go to seed. There is little that the IAP-ID as a body can do to influence a change of policy with regard to course content, teaching, or the system of examination at the MD. However, since the majority of patholgists in the field accept and report on some, if only a few surgical pathology specimens, the IAP-ID can and should expand its present scope of holding educational workshops and CME’s to support other activities that encourage professional development in surgical pathology. The formation of surgical pathology clubs for practising pathologists to share and exchange material and ideas, and mini EQA and proficiency testing exercises are some examples. In Mumbai, one such group activity, aimed at education and self evaluation of the skills of individual pathologists who join the scheme, was initiated under the dynamic leadership of Dr. R B Deshpande of Hinduja Hospital. The scheme is called Continuing Professional Development or, CPD for short. For a nominal fee to meet costs, histopathology slides are circulated to all members in the scheme three times in a year. On receipt of the completed answer sheets, feed back on the diagnosis
with a short write up on the case are sent to the participants. At a meeting
to mark the completion of one year in operation, participants judged the
scheme a success. Many more members were enrolled. I have no doubt that
other group activities exist in other parts of our country outside of
the major teaching institutions. The IAP- ID would like to hear of these
activities so that information about them could be disseminated in the
Newsletter and on the website. In the future, I hope that our division
will play a more facilitatory role in such activities, so that regional
and finally a national Voluntary EQA program are realised in India. |
