I am very happy to present to you this issue of the IAP-ID Newsletter (Vol 10, No 2, July 2007) encapsulating recent events in the Indian Division of the IAP as well as providing insights into forthcoming activities. The Newsletter helps members keep abreast of the various activities of the IAP-Indian Division as well as the IAP. I appeal to all those members involved in various activities of the IAP and the IAP-ID to send their inputs to me so as the relevant material may be incorporated in the Divisional Newsletter so as to make the Newsletter more informative and effective. It has been my constant endeavor since inception to innovate and enrich the form and content of the Newsletter so as to make it attractive to the members. The Newsletter needs to be self financing so as not to drain the corpus
of the IAP-ID. I once again earnestly appeal to all members to use your
good offices to arrange sponsors and advertisers for the IAP-ID Newsletter.

This year for the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2007 at PGIMER, Chandigarh, our invited Guest Speaker will be Dr. Jaime Prat, Professor & Chairman, Department of Pathology, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. The IAP-ID is deeply honoured and happy to have Prof. Prat attend the Meeting. A brief biodata of Prof. Prat is given here under for the benefit of the members: Prof. Dr. JAIME PRAT Born in Tenerife, Spain, Dr. Prat has served as Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and Professor of Pathology at Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, since 1986. Dr. Prat is currently the President of the International Society of Gynecologic Pathologists (2007-2009) and is also a member of the WHO Committee for Classification of Tumours of the Female Genital Tract, (IARC, Lyon France). He has been President of the European Board of Pathology (1999-2004). Highly qualified Prof. Jaime Prat obtained his M.D., Univ Complutense, Madrid (1970); ECFMG (USA, 1970); SHPG (Spain, 1971); FLEX (USA, 1974); American Board of Pathology (USA, 1975); Ph.D. Univ La Laguna (1978), magna cum laude; and FRCPath (GB, 1993). Dr. Jaime Prat’s training in Medicine and Pathology include terms at the Hospital Provincial, Madrid (1970-71); Resident (Pathology), Fund Jimenez Diaz, Madrid (1971-72); Resident, New York Hospital-Cornell Med Center, New York, USA (1973-75) where he trained in anatomic pathology; Fellow, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA (1975-76) where he did a post doctoral fellowship in Surgical Pathology. His research fellowships include Fellow, Cajal Institute, CSIC, Madrid (1963-65) and Junior Faculty Clinical Fellow, American Cancer Society, USA (1977-80). Dr. Jaime Prat has had several academic appointments over the years and was a Teaching Fellow at Cornell University Medical College, New York, USA (1973-76). He became a faculty member of the Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts General Hospital, working under the leadership of Dr. Robert E. Scully for five years. At Harvard, he was first Instructor (1976 78) and then Assistant Professor (1978 81) Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. During this time, he was also a Junior Faculty Clinical Fellow of the American Cancer Society, studied the consequences of in utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol, and published several original papers on gynecologic cancers. Subsequently Dr. Prat joined as Associate Professor, Univ Alicante (1982-83) and then was Professor, Univ Alicante (1983-86). From 1986 he has been Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. Prof. Prat has also been Visiting Professor of Pathology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA, USA (2004-05). Dr. Prat been on faculty at the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology since 1977, lecturing at three short courses and the 2004 long course. He has also been a guest speaker at the 2001 Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists. For the last 20 years, he has lectured at many postgraduate courses and has been invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings. Prof. Jaime Prat is member of many professional bodies and has held office and assignments in several professional societies. These include the US and Canadian Academy of Pathol, Faculty (1977- ); Int Soc Gynecol Pathol (1978- ); Member-at-Large (1998-03), President Elect (2005-07), President (2007-09). Arthur Purdy Stout Soc Surg Pathol (1980- ). Europ Soc Pathol (1988-); Int Gynecol Cancer Soc (1993-); Member of the Council (2005- ); Fellow, The Royal College of Pathologists, GB (1993- ); Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology, U.S.A. Prof. Jaime Prat also serves on several important Committees and has been Delegate, European Union of Medical Specialties, Section Pathology, European Community (1989-99); Member, Examination Committee, European Board of Pathology (1992- ); President, European Board of Pathology (European Union of Medical Specialties, Section of Pathology) (1999-04); Advisor, National Council of Medical Specialties, Anat Pathol, Depart of Education and Science (1985-89); Member, Peer Review Committe FISS, Dept of Health (Clinical Medicine) (1993-96); Member, National Committee for Evaluation of Research Activity, Group 4 (Biomedical Sciences), Department of Education (2000-01); WHO Committee for Classification of Tumours of the Female Genital Tract, IARC, Lyon, France (2002); Invited participant, Borderline Ovarian Tumor Consensus Conference, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Md, August 27-28, 2003 (Only Non-US-Canadian invited participant). He is on the Editorial Boards of several prestigious Journals like the American Journal of Surgical Pathology (USA.); Human Pathol (USA); Virchow Archiv (Germany); Gynecologic Oncology (USA); Int J Gynecol Pathol (USA) (Associate Editor); Int J Gynecol Cancer, Int Ed (2000-) (USA); Pathology International (Japan); Appl Immunohistochem Mol Morphol (USA); Int J Surg Pathol (USA); Patologia; Surg Pathol (USA); Current Topics in Pathology (Editor); and, It J Gynaecol Obstet (Italy). He is the author of over 190 publications which include Original articles (129), Case Reports and CPCs (34), Reviews (33), Books and Monographs (21), Letters and Editorials (19) and CD-Roms (3). He is credited with 5 periods of 6 years (1973-2003) of research activity by the National Committee for Evaluation of Research, Department of Education, Spain. Dr. Jaime Prat has collaborations with several Institutions like the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Boston, USA; New England Med Center, Tufts Univ, Boston, USA; Ancona Univ, Italia; Kurume Univ, Japan; Johns Hopkins Tumor Biology Laboratory; and, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA (40 visiting fellows over the last 20 years). Prof. Jaime Prat is a very active
research worker having a large number of research projects. His research
has focused mainly on clincopathologic features and molecular genetics
of gynecological malignancies. He research topics include Ovarian tumours,
Endometrial Carcinoma, Human Transpalcental Carcinogenesis (Diethylstilbestrol),
Vulval intraepithelial Neoplasia and Dermatoses, Human Papilloma Virus
and Cervical Cancer, Soft Tissue Sarcomas, and Endocrine Pathology particularly
Thyroid tumours and Adrenal tumours. |
| IAP – ID Academic Activities 2008 |
The IAP-ID has the following programmes during the course of the year
: Those members desirous of organizing and hosting the Mid Year Teaching Programme 2008 or the 11th IAP-ID Annual CME 2008 should send their concrete proposals with the theme of the meeting to the Secretary & Treasurer, Dr. Francisco Couto. For the Annual Meeting 2008 (held along with the IAPM Conference), those
desirous of being Moderators for the Symposium or Slide Seminar should
send in their names along with the proposed title of the Symposium and
Slide Seminar to the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. Also as per the
decision of the General Body of the IAP-ID certain topics have been suggested
as possible subjects for the Slide Seminar and Symposium. Members desirous
of being Moderators for any of these topics should send their names to
the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. However, as per the decision of
the Council and General Body of the IAP-ID, the person selected as the
moderator shall be the one who is felt to be best suited to be for the

Slide Sets on “Tumour and Tumour like lesions of the Soft Tissues”
will be on sale for those members wishing to view the glass slides of
the IAP-ID 10th Annual CME to be held at Nizam’s Institute of Medical
Sciences, Hyderabad, and will be provided on a first come first serve
basis. The cost of the Slide set is Rs. 600/-. |
| CD on Neuromuscular Disorders |
A CD with the
proceedings and discussion of the IAP-ID Symposium on “Neuromuscular
Disorders”, moderated by Dr. C. Sundaram, is available for a fee

| US Canadian Academy of Pathology |
Extensive Educational material, proceedings of scientific meetings, etc.,
are made available on the USCAP website for members of the Indian Division
of IAP. The IAP-ID Newsletter is also featured on this site as well as
the Newsletters of several other IAP Divisions. Material from Long and
Short Courses and Symposia of various USCAP and IAP meetings are available
on the site. Members are urged to explore the "Pathology Hub"
on the site which a treasure trove of educational and scientific material.

For the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2007 at PGIMER, Chandigarh, we have the pleasure of having as a special invitee Dr. Ann Marie Nelson, Chief of AIDS Pathology and Emerging Infections, AFIP, Washington DC, USA, who will be delivering a lecture at the Meeting. For the benefit of the members a brief biodata of Dr. Ann Marie Nelson is given here under: Dr. Ann Marie Nelson Dr. Ann Marie Nelson is an anatomic and clinical pathologist with more than 25 years experience in global infections. She has been Chief, Division of AIDS Pathology and Emerging Infectious Diseases at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) since 1994 and is committed to improving health care by promoting more rapid and more accurate diagnoses, especially in parts of the world where resources are limited. In order to address these issues she has founded the International Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Initiative. Dr. Nelson received her medical school training at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico and did her residency at VA Wadsworth Veterans Hospital, University of California Los Angeles, and infectious disease pathology training at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. From 1986 to 1991 she was assigned to Projet SIDA, an international AIDS project in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (ex Zaire) where she did work on HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, including large studies on morbid anatomy, placental pathology and gynecologic cytopathology (esp HPV and dysplasia in HIV-infected women). She has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and monographs on AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases and given more than 150 invited lectures at national and international meetings and universities. Dr. Nelson has served on the Education Committee of USCAP, was president of the Binford-Dammin Infectious Disease Pathology Society and the History of Pathology Society. She has been a presenter or co-convenor of Infectious Disease Pathology Sessions at four IAP Congresses and was a member of the Organizing Committee for the IAP 100th Anniversary Congress in Montreal. |
| IAP-ID 10th Annual CME 2007 Hyderbad |
The IAP-ID 10th Annual CME will be held on the 28th and 29th July 2007
at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderbad on the theme "Tumour
and Tumour like lesions of the Soft Tissues".The Organizing Secretary
of the CME is Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin under the Chairmanship of Dr. C.
Sundaram. The deliberations of the CME will be relevant to Pathologists, Radiologists,
Medical and Surgical Oncologists. The participating faculty in the CME
are known experts in their field. The CME will include diadatic lectures,

| Condolences |
It is with deepest regret and sadness that I announce the passing away
on 7th April 2007 of Dr. Bhanumati S. Pandya, a senior former member of
the IAP-ID. At the time of her passing Dr. Pandya was the Professor &
Head, Department of Pathology, Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group
of Hospitals, Mumbai. Dr. Bhanumati Pandya is survived by her husband
Dr. Sumant Pandya and a son and daughter. On behalf of the Council and
members of the IAP-ID I extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to
her family.

IAP-ID MID YEAR TEACHING PROGRAMME 2007
|
The IAP-ID Mid Year Teaching Programme 2007 was held on the 24th and 25th February 2007 at the T. N. Medical College and B Y L Nair Hospital, Mumbai, on the topic "Renal & Male Genital System". Dr. N. K. Bahal was the Programme Director and Dr. Vinaya Shah and Dr. V. S. Kavishwar, the Organizing Secretaries. The CME was inaugurated by Dr. S. R. Prabhu (Senior Pathologist and former Head of Pathology at T N Medical College) in the distinguished presence of Dr. S. N. Oak (Dean, T N Medical College), Dr. K. Uma Chaturvedi (President, IAP-ID), Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID) and other dignitaries.
The CME was very well attended and had more than 150 delegates including Post Graduate students, Pathologists, Nephrologists and Surgeons, from all parts of India. All aspects were covered including guidelines for arriving at correct diagnosis, problems and pitfalls in the interpretation of surgical pathology material from the Renal and Male Genital System. The topics covered included "Problems in Pediatric Urology", Relevance of 2004 WHO Classification of Renal Cell Carcinoma", "Cystic Lesions of Kidney", "Mesenchymal Tumours of Kidney", Tumour like lesions of Urinary Bladder", "Rational Approach to Tumours of the Urinary Bladder", "Interpretation of Renal Biopsy", "The dilemmas of organized deposits in Renal Diseases", "The Glomeruli in Systemic Diseases", "Interstitial Nephritis", "Renal Biopsy in Allograft dysfunction", "Interpretation of TRUS guided Prostatic biopsy", "Uncommon tumours of Testis and Adenexae" and, "Gonadal Dysgenesis". The topics were very ably covered by a very distinguished Faculty which included Dr. S. N. Oak, Dr. Arun R. Chitale, Dr. Anita Borges, Dr. B. M. Kandalkar, Dr. Shaila Khubchandani, Dr. Sudha Y. Sane, and Dr. Vinaya B. Shah. The CME evoked keen interest not only in Pathologists but in Clinicians alike and was very interesting because of the interaction between Pathologists and Clinicians. A CD of the CME was distributed to the delegates by the Organizers. The CME was very well organized and the delegates found the CME extremely useful. On behalf of the IAP-ID the Secretary & Treasurer Dr. Francisco Couto thanked Dr. N. K. Bahal, Dr. Vinaya Shah, Dr. V. S. Kavishwar and their team for organizing the excellent CME.
